1. 16. John H Bradshaw was born 1811, Stafford County, Virginia, United States (son of Zachariah Bradshaw and Elizabeth); died 30 Jan 1879, Stafford County, Virginia, United States.

    Notes:

There is a discrepancy concerning his date of birth. On his application for marriage in 1854 he says he is 40 years old which would make his date of birth 1814. J. Douglas Bradshaw, in his book, says his date of birth is 1811.

1840 Stafford Co., Va. census lists his household as: his age being 20-30 years, 1 female age 20-30 (probably his wife Ann), 1 female age 60-70 (probably his mother-in-law). No slaves are listed, but one free male colored person age 10-24 is listed as living in the household.

1850 Stafford Co., Va. census lists him as being 39 years old, his wife, Ann, age 28, and their daughter Virginia as age 12. He is listed as a farmer and his real estate is valued as $600.00.

1860 Stafford Co., Va. census lists his household as: his age as 46, his wife, Enfield, as age 28, his children as Alice age 4, Charles age 3, Virginia age 1, and Sarah age 6 a mulatto. His occupation is farmer and the value of his real estate is $3000.00. His personal property is valued at $600.00.

1870 Stafford Co., Va. census lists him as age 53, farmer, real estate value $2000.00 and personal property at $400.00. The family consisted of Alice age 13, Charles age 11, Fannie age 9, John age 8 and Lucy age 7. His wife had died.

1880 Stafford Co., Va. census lists the household as headed by Charles age 20 (John had died), Mary A. (Alice) age 29, Fannie F. age 24, John F. age 19 and Lucy age 16.

John H. Bradshaw died without a will and the administration of the estate was in the Stafford Co., Va. Court.

John married Scythia or Scithe Enfield Fritter 31 Aug 1854, Stafford County, Virginia, United States. Scythia (daughter of Barnett Fritter and Mary Fant) was born 26 Aug 1830, Stafford County, Virginia; died 10 Jan 1863, Stafford County, Virginia, United States. [Group Sheet]

  2. 17. Scythia or Scithe Enfield Fritter was born 26 Aug 1830, Stafford County, Virginia (daughter of Barnett Fritter and Mary Fant); died 10 Jan 1863, Stafford County, Virginia, United States.

    Notes:

She usually went by the name "Enfield Bradshaw" as in the listing for the marriage of her daughter, Lucie, where she is listed as "E." BRADSHA

    Notes:

Marriage records of Stafford Co., Va. state that his age was 40 and hers was 24. He stated he was a widower, she was single and that both of them were born in Stafford Co., Va.

  7. 28. Gus Little (son of Lucinda Corpening and John Eli Corpening).

Gus married Barbara Propst 3 Feb 1803. Barbara (daughter of Johann Michael Propst and Anna Maria Kerr) was born 2 Feb 1754, Lynn Township, Hampton City, York County, Pennsylvania; died Abt 1829, Burke County or Caldwell County, North Carolina; was buried 1829. [Group Sheet]

  8. 29. Barbara Propst was born 2 Feb 1754, Lynn Township, Hampton City, York County, Pennsylvania (daughter of Johann Michael Propst and Anna Maria Kerr); died Abt 1829, Burke County or Caldwell County, North Carolina; was buried 1829.

    Notes:

In 1774, shortly after their marriage, Albert and Barbara began a trip to North Carolina. They were held up by a snow storm and stayed the winter with a farmer where Albert helped with the farm work for a shilling and board per day, and Barbara helped the wife. They finally arrived in Lincoln County, North Carolina, where their first child, John, was born April 3 1775.

Coming into what is now Caldwell County, NC, they purchased a large acreage on both sides of Lower Creek in the Copenhagen section on the present Calico Road from Christopher Beckman.

All of this information is from "The Heritage of Burke Co, NC", 1981, pp 149-153.

According to Elaine Schwar and Carolyn Price (noted Brobst historians), Barbara was a daughter of Johann Michael Probst (1701). Some other records do not show her in that family, but those records do not show her anywhere else, either.

Other records (Lee Ann Propst) show that she had a brother, Henry, who moved with her and Albert from Pennsylvania to Rowan County, North Carolina shortly after their marriage. Because of bad weather, they had to lay over in Western Virginia for some time before moving on to NC in 1775. But Johann Michael Probst didn't have a son named Henry. Henry may have been a cousin or a nephew.

It was once thought that she might have been a daughter of Johann Michael Propst (1712), not Probst, and so belongs to the West Virginia Propsts. However, if in fact, she was born in Lynn Township, Northampton (Lehigh) County, PA, then she is probably correctly placed in the family of Johann Michael Probst (1701). Considering the date of her reported birth -- 1754, and marriage in Penna in 1774, when Johann Michael Propst was already in Pendleton Co, WV (Rockingham Co, VA) by then, so she could not have been his daughter.

The 1713 German Bible which belonged to Barbara Probst is in a vault in the Asheville [Pack Memorial] NC Library. In that Bible, her name is shown as Probst. The Bible does not contain any ancestry data; only the statement: "Bible belonging to ancestors of Barbara Probst (Mrs. Albert Corpening) mother of David Corpening and Catherine Corpening (Mrs. John Shuford) of North Carolina".

Pending any further evidence, I have shown her as a daughter of Johann Michael Probst (1701) and Anna Maria Kerr (abt 1710).

Another record shows that she lived as a widow in Somersettown, PA, in 1796, 1804, and 1814, and died in Somerset, PA. But Albert didn't die until 1827, and she was still alive -- named in his will. This record appears clearly to be in error; must have been some other Barbara Probst/Brobst.

Her will was probated in January 1830 in Burke (now Caldwell) Co, NC.

    Notes:

Hendrick Courpenning landed at Philadelphia on the ship Duke of Bedford, Richard Jefferies was captain. From Rotterdam last from Plymouth, on September 14, 1751.

The spelling of the name has been changed through time. It seems that Albert's descendants spelled the name Copening and Corpening -- the latter more generally used, while John's descendants spelled Chorpening.

    Notes:

He is listed as a non-resident of the state of Virginia in the chancery suit in Prince Edward Co., Va. for a division of the estates of his grandparents, John and Margaret Bradshaw, in 1826. In actuality he was living in Stafford Co., Va. where his plantation was right next to that of his brother, Harberson Bradshaw.

    ZACHARIAH BRADSHAW

As evidenced by the following document, apparently after 10 years the parties to the Chancery Suit filed still had not located the descendants of Jeremiah Bradshaw. There is no explanation for this except that they apparently didn't keep in touch with each other.

March 16, 1836, filed by one of the commissioners, John Foster:

Pursuant to the several decrees made in the case of Bradshaw vs. Bradshaw heirs, the commissioners have paid the several portions of each and all of the parties interested in the decree made in this cause, except the joint portion of ____ Edson and Polly, his wife, ____ Logan and Phoebe, his wife, Zachariah Bradshaw and Jane Bradshaw, heirs of Jeremiah Bradshaw, deceased. The said joint portion is $160.06 with interest from 18 Jan. 1828 till the 16th. Nov. 1830 at which time the money was rcd. by the commrs. and has been ready for them on application at all times since. Your commrs. do not know the parties, nor do they know where they live, but have been informed by Major Dickinson, Administrator of John Bradshaw, Snr., decd., that Zachariah and Jane Bradshaw is now dead, leaving no issue & the portion of the one that is dead will of course be reserved by the commrs. for the further disposition of the court.

Not only was there no contact between these branches of the family, but there were three, possibly four of Jeremiah's children that weren't even mentioned in the Bill in Chancery, Harberson, Henry who was more than likely a son, John, and William. (see notes for William Bradshaw)

Zachariah is listed in the 1807 Personal Property Tax List as paying a tax of .56 on one tithe, one horse and one male slave between 12 and 16 years old.

On the 1809 list he paid a tax of .12 on one tithe and one horse. The slave must have been sold. In 1810 his tax was the same.

In 1812 he paid a tax of .12 on one tithe and two horses.

The 1810 census for Stafford Co., Va. lists him as being 26-44 years old, 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-44, 1 female over 45, and having 2 slaves.

The 1820 census for the same county lists him as being 45 or more, 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44, having 2 slaves. He is listed as being in the house counted #700 and Harberson is listed as house #702.

The 1830 census for the same county lists him as being age 50-60, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 40-50, owning 7 slaves.

The 1840 census for the same county lists him as being age 60-70, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 30-40, owning 5 male slaves. By the time of this census his wife had died. This is the last census listing Zachariah.

March 1, 1839, Book LL, pg. 416- Deed from the Thomas Seddon Estate to Zachariah for 197.75 acres. This land is believed to be the land owned later by Charles Mason Bradshaw which was known as "Pleasant Hill".

Zachariah died sometime before the 1850 census. There are no probate records in Stafford for him. Apparantly, after he lost his farm to foreclosure he never bought another one.

The W.P.A., an agency of the government, was recording and cataloging the historically significant homes, churches and buildings in Stafford Co., Va. in the 1930's. "Pleasant Hill", also known as "Mount Pleasant", was one of those listed. The report is on pg. 274.

    SUBJECT:

    Mount Pleasant

    LOCATION:

9 miles northwest of Falmouth, Va.; thence .1 mile north of Route #612.

    DATE:

    About 1811

    OWNERS:

John H. Bradshaw was the first owner. Charles Bradshaw owned it for a number of years. Mr. C. E. Ramsey, present owner. (John H. Bradshaw could not have built this home as he was born in the same year the house was supposed to be built. It probably was built by Zachariah Bradshaw, his father.)

    DESCRIPTION:

This house was probably given the name "Mount Pleasant" because of it's location. The main part of the original house is today used as a kitchen.

    HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

When the northern soldiers came down the old Warrenton Road, which is Route #612 today, they camped on this farm and had to get out in the fields as the mud was so deep in places. The "Mud March", or the road which they came over, is directly in front of this house.

Built Walnut Grove, also call Calico in 1856.

    Notes:

After marriage in 1774 they came to Lincoln County, North Carolina, the next winter, as their oldest child was born in Lincoln County in 1775. As they came to North Carolina they were snow bound in Virginia about forty days, and during that time they stayed with a farmer. Corpening threshed wheat at one shilling and board per day, and his wife helped the farmers wife for her board. It is said that there was another man who came with them, he said he would not work for one shilling per day, but would rather pay that amount for board.

Albert lived about one year in Lincoln County, then moved to Burke County (now Caldwell County) and settled on Lower Creek. The log house that he built on the east side of Lower Creek was still standing in 1920. The land Albert owned was granted by Earl Granville under King George II - being granted to Philip Kearns, January 8, 1761. It was conveyed to Conrad Mitchel in 1762, then to John Conrad Kerns in 1744, then to Christopher Beckman in 1780, and to Albert Corpening in 1780.

The family that left North Carolina for Maryland and later Pennsylvania spelled their name Chorpening.

    Notes:

He came to America in 1732, arriving in Philadelphia on the pink (ship) John and William on Octobert 17, 1732. He came with his brother Philipp Jacob (and family) and his sister Elisabetha Margaretha (and her husband). Since winter's onset was near, they probably remained in Philadelphia over the winter, gathering supplies and equipment, and left for the Allemaengle in early spring.

When he came to America, he was already 31 years old. Since it would be most unusual for a man not to have married and started a family in his early 20s, it is possible that he already done that, and left a wife and some children behind. It is possible they might have died, and that released him to come to America, or he might have been so driven to start a new life he just left them behind. They might not have wanted to face the unknowns of the American wilderness. However, according to German records, in 1727 Michael was a travelling potter, not married, and was listed on the ship's manifest as still single when he emigrated, so it is assumed that he did not marry in Germany.

Another record says his birth date was Mar 13 1707. This must have been a mis-reading of the German script "1" which often looks like a "7". The 1701 birth date is verified in the baptismal records in Kandel and in the Lineage Succession List from Kandel.

Sometime between his arrival in Philadelphia and mid-1735, Johann Michael married. He might have married during the winter in Philadelphia, or might have found his future wife in the Allemaengle. Birth and baptismal records of his children indicate that her name was Maria or Anna Maria, a name quite common in those days. The marriage record has not been found, and her maiden name is still unproven; several long-time Brobst researchers believe her maiden name to be Kerr (or Kehr), and that is what is shown here.

William Crouch believes her name was Anna Maria Grimm, but there is apparently no supporting evidence for this.

For a long time, it has been assumed that her name was Anna Maria Keller, but that hypothesis has been proven wrong. Anna Maria Keller was the widow of Peter Keller, and she lived in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County in the early 1730s. Her marriage to Johann Michael Probst is recorded at the Muddy Creek Lutheran Church on December 25, 1733. That was not "this" Johann Michael Probst.

In order for that to be true, it would have meant that Johann Michael left his brother and sister and their families and went to Lancaster Co instead of Berks/Lehigh Co. Why would he have done such a thing? And then to come to Berks/Lehigh Co a year or so after his marriage, for his first child was born in Lynn Twp in 1836. Would he have left his family with whom he had been through so much and struck off on his own to find a wife in Lancaster County, rather than accompanying his family to the Allemaengle and looking for a wife there? And, in fact, that was not the case.

It was once thought that Johann Michael may have met Anna Maria Keller on the ship enroute to America, but there was no Keller, and no Anna Maria, listed on the ship's manifest. There is no indication that he had any knowledge of Anna Maria Keller prior to or during the voyage, or in Philadelphia over the winter. Given that, there would be no reason for him to go to Lancaster to marry her and bring her to Lynn Township, Lehigh County. There is no evidence that he even knew she existed.

There is no evidence that Johann Michael Probst ever went to Lancaster, nor that if he did he stayed in Lancaster County for some time, perhaps a year, and then moved to Lynn Twp, Northampton (Lehigh) Co, PA to rejoin the rest of his immigrant family. All indications are that he left Philadelphia with his brother and sister in the spring of 1733 and moved directly to Lynn Twp. His children are all recorded as having been born in Northampton (Lehigh) County.

So who was the Johann Michael Probst who married Anna Maria Keller in Lancaster County? Johann Michael Propst (b abt 1712) arrived in America in 1733 on the ship "Samuel", and moved to Lancaster County with his parents and sister. This Johann Michael Propst actually signed his name "Probst", not "Propst" on his immigration and oath of allegiance papers, and apparently used that same spelling on the marriage record in Lancaster County. His signature is quite clear written with the "Probst" spelling. He remained in Lancaster County for some years, and had four children with Anna Maria Keller from 1735 to 1738. After Anna Maria died in 1738, he quickly married a second time there, before migrating southward to what is now Pendleton County, West Virginia. Accordingly, I have recorded the marriage of Anna Maria Keller to Johan Michael Propst in the Propst family file.

History still has to tell us something about this wife -- Anna Maria Kehr/Kerr -- of Johann Michael Probst. We do know that Johann Michael and Anna Maria lived in Lehigh County, having founded the village of what became Hynemansville.

He received his citizenship papers on September 10 1761 in Philadelphia.

His farm was in Lynn Township, Northampton County (now Lehigh County), about 7 miles southeast of his brother's (Philipp Jacob's) farm which was in Albany Twp.

His death date is not certain. Most records show "about 1771"; one says "after 1790". His death location is also uncertain, but was most likely in a private cemetery on his farmsite

Court.

    Removal of Disabilities,

The disability bill which passed the House and Senate of the United States last week contains the names of over two thousand Virginians, among whom are some of the most prominent men in the State. The bill has been sent to the President for his signature, and no doubt before this has become a law. There is another bill being prepared now by the committee which embraces the names of hundreds of other Virginians, and it is the impression of gentlemen in prominent positions at Washington that it will soon be acted upon. Those who are desirous of having their political disabilities removed would do well to foreward their applications to some one of the Virginia Representatives in Congress immediately.

We append the names of those residing in this and the adjacent counties which appear in the bill just passed:

    Fredericksburg---John S. G. Timberlake, John M. Herndon, M. H. Bradshaw, Elliott M. Braxton, etc......

STABBED---We learn that Friday night Lawrence Whitehead a colored barber on Main street, was stabbed by Mr. Murray Hugh Bradshaw. We have not heard all the particulars and only state the occurance. The stab is not dangerous.

"Fredericksburg Herald" dated June 13, 1870

    FATAL STABBING

About fifteen minutes to eight o'clock, Thursday evening last, a difficulty occurred in front of the grocery store of Wm. H. Thomas, Jr. at the upper end of Main street, brtween Murray H. Bradshaw, (white) and James Lewis, (colored) resulting in the fatal stabbing of the latter.

The facts cited seem to be as follows: Bradshaw, who is engaged in the coopering business, had formerly in his employment the colored man Lewis, whom he charged with building a fire in his shop, which he said came near burning it up, had it not been for his timely presence.

This charge the colored man denied, saying that he could prove by a Mr. Watson that he had not been at the shop that evening, and that he had not made the fire, as charged. One word followed another, when Bradshaw struck Lewis in the face; a scuffle ensued during which he (Bradshaw) drew a knife and stabbed the negro, Lewis, to the heart, killing him almost instantly. On Friday morning, at 9 o'clock, an inquest was held upon the body of the deceased, and a verdict rendered according to the testimony.

The following is the verdict of the Coroner's Jury:

    Corporation of Fredericksburg, to wit:

An inquisition taken at Wm. H. Thomas', Jr., Store, in the Corporation of Fredericksburg, on the 10th day of June, 1870, before L. B. Rose, Mayor, and as such acting coroner of the said Corporation, upon the view of the body of James Lewis, (colored) there lying dead: The jurors sworn to inquire when, how and by what means the said James Lewis came to his death upon their oaths, do say that said James Lewis came to his death from two wounds in the left breast inflicted by Murray H. Bradshaw with some sharp pointed instrument, supposed to be a knife.

In testimony whereof the said Coroner and jurors hereto set their hands.

    L. B. Rose, Coroner; John S. Young, Foreman; (note: can't read next three names, A. B. M.) Samuel B. Kearsley, J. W. Ford, William Johnson, James H. Roy, John G. Hurkamp, Horace B. Hall, William T. Lowery, John Hayden.

After the examination of the body, two more wounds were found, either of which was sufficient to cause death.

The jury, after holding the inquest, adjourned to the Mayor's Office to hear the testimony of the witnesses who were summoned and severly sworn. James W. Watson testified that he was sitting on the steps of the store of William H. Thomas, Jr., when he saw Murray H. Bradshaw approach James Lewis, and in rather an excited tone and manner, accused the said Lewis with making a fire in his shop, which, if he had not extinguished at the very time he did, would have burned it up. Lewis denied the charge, when Bradshaw called him a liar, and struck him in the face, and then stepped back toeard the curb-stone, when Lewis advanced one or two steps toward him, but did not strike. Heard no words pass between them; thought he saw passes between them a few moments after, as they were retreating toward the corner of the store, but did not hear the blows; saw a pistol, but no knife, in the hands of Bradshaw; they then began to scuffle , and disappeared behind the corner of the store out of view; in a few seconds the colored man, Lewis, came around the corner, approaching the witness, and putting his hands on his breast, said the damned scroundrel has cut me; commenced trembling, and sat down on the stone step at the store door and expired.

Chas. E. Bentley was examined and corroborated the statement of the witness Watson in several particulars. William H. Thomas, Jr., was in his store when he heard the noise outside, then he stepped to the door; saw the parties scuffling, but did not see weapons of any kind in the hands of either party. The balance of his testimony was the same as given by the witness Watson.

Wm. Jefferson sworn: Lives on Princess Anne street, two squares from where the stabbing took place; saw Bradshaw running by the house while he was at the window, apparantly out of breath.

William H. Thomas, Sr., was the last witness examined: He was in his son's store with his back towards the door, engaged in conversation; heard loud talking outside, and went to the door; saw the scuffle and also Bradshaw strike the negro and push him off from him; did not see weapons used; the parties disappeared behind the corner of the house, thought nothing more of it, as he had seen them before, engaged in scuffling; soon Lewis came from behind the corner, approached the store door, putting his hand to his breast, saying, as in the testimony of Watson, that he had been cut &c. Bradshaw, after seeing the effects of the stabbing, ran off up the street toward his home, making his escape before an alarm could be given, and when this was written had not been arrested. The wounds must have been inflicted whilst behind the house, and out of view of the witnesses, as none of them saw the cutting or the weapon used in doing it.

    ANOTHER DONATION

Mrs. Bradshaw Aids Movement For Addition to Hospital

Mrs. John T. Goolrick, president Mary Washington Hospital Association has received from Mrs. Mary A. Bradshaw and daughter, Miss Virginia Bradshaw, of Washington, a check for a good sum for the fund being raised for building the addition to the hospital. Mrs. Bradshaw is a sister of the late Judge Jas. B. Sener. She resided in the city for many years and takes a lively interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of Fredericksburg.

If all the old residents of this city now living away from here would follow Mrs. B.'s example it would give them pleasure and mean much for Fredericksburg.

NOTE: There are things about this article which lead to more questions, such as the name of MARY A. Bradshaw and also the fact that there is a daughter named VIRGINIA. Unless Virginia A. Sener had a sister who also married a Bradshaw, this is most certainly Virginia, as evidenced by her place of residence and also the fact that it states she was a sister of Judge James B. Sener.

    BRADSHAW--KIMBROUGH

A pretty home wedding of Tuesday was that of Miss Frances Kimbrough, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kimbrough, 2207 West Grace Street, Richmond, and Dr. Charles Lawrence Bradshaw, of Falmouth, Va., a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Bradshaw, of Stafford county.

The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. in the home of the bride's parents, in the presence of friends and relatives. The Rev. George W. Kemper, pastor of Hanover Avenue Christian Church, officiated.

The house was decorated with quantities of pink flowers against a background of palms and ferns. Pink snap dragons, sweet peas and gladioluses banked the mantels and a great basket of them adorned the table in the dining room.

Just before the ceremony Mrs. P. McK. Shiflett sang "O Promise Me," and during the service "O Perfect Day" was softly played, while Mendelssohn's wedding march was rendered as a processional.

The bride entered with her father, who gave her in marriage. She wore a going-away gown of sand-colored poplin, hat and gloves to correspond, and a corsage bouquet of lilies of the valley and orchids.

His exact birth date is not known; the Mar 31 1661 date is of his christening. Bill Brobst has a copy of the birth and marriage records, in the German Pfalz file.

Christophel was a master potter (Meistertopfer) in Middle Kandel. Church records call him a Burger and Haffner in Kandel.

Church records show his name as Christoph, as do several historical reports.

At a court held for Prince Edward County, October 20th. 1788, the Last Will and Testament of John Bradshaw, deceased, was presented in court and proved by William Kuling, a witness thereto and at another court held for said county November 18, 1788 this will was further proved by William Hamblin.

Probate proceedings were taken right away, but the estate of John Bradshaw wasn't settled until 1867.

According to the application for membership in the D. A. R. of Louise Brooks Howard, John Bradshaw is classified as a Patriot, even though he didn't serve in the military, because he supplied 275 lbs. of beef to the soldiers during the war.

Zachariah was in the War of 1812 as a private in the 4th Regiment Virginia Militia under the command of Lt. Col. LUCAS, Maj. WILLS and Capt. Arthur SMITH'S Company of Infantry. He is on the muster rolls for August 1, 1812 through January 31, 1813. On his payroll papers he was paid $6.66 per month.

The house and a lot on Caroline Street near the upper end of this town(Fredsbg.) which I bought of Mrs. Jenette STRODE, together with all the money I may have on hand or in any way due me at my death, the household and kitchen furniture except my Eight day corner clock, which I give and bequeath to my son, Murray Hugh BRADSHAW, who is now a soldier in the Confederate Army, and if he should fall during this struggle for liberty, the Clock then to go to my beloved wife, during the time of her natural life, and after her death to be divided equally among my four sons, Murray Hugh, Walter Nelson, Philip Montague and Thatcher Sanders. To my son, Philip Montague, the House and lot situated and lying on Caroline Street running through to Water and Sophia Street with width equal to the front and if he should die without bodily heirs the said House and lot is to revert to his three brothers, namely, Murray Hugh, Walter Nelson and Thatcher Sanders. Capt. U. H. Bradshaw, for many long years a well known and useful citizen of this town, died suddenly of heart disease at his residence last evening about eight o'clock. Capt. B. was a good citizen, a kind father, an excellent husband, "truly in the midst of life we are in death." I still, at this time don't know to what the Capt. refers.

newspaper article---"The Fredericksburg News" dated April 2, 1857

On Monday night last about half-past nine o'clock, the Cooper Shop of U. H. BRADSHAW was consumed by fire--together with a large stock of timber, tools &c. The loss, we understand is $2,500. No insurance.

    newspaper article---"Free Lance" dated Sept. 22, 1898

    THE BRADSHAW COOPER SHOP BURNED

The building on upper Main Street known as the BRADSHAW Cooper Shop took fire from a spark yesterday evening about 3 o'clock and in fifteen minutes was totally destroyed. It belonged to the BRADSHAW estate.

In the building was a lot of hay, salt and railroad scoops, all belonging to Mr. E. W. MILLS, which was also burned. The loss on building is about $500 and stock in it $250. There was no insurance on either.

    newspaper article---"Daily Star" dated Sept. 21, 1898

    Work Of The Flames

At 3 o'clock this afternoon the old one story brick cooper shop on the BRADSHAW property, situated on Pitt street, between Water and Main streets, was discovered to be on fire by Mr. James MILLS, who occupies the residence on the same lot. When first discovered only a small part of the roof was on fire, but all the woodwork about the building was soon ablaze, owing to its dry condition, and in twenty minutes the building fell in.

Mr. MILLS is convinced that the fire was caused by a spark.

Mr. E. W. MILLS had the scoops, shovels,&c., of the Northern Neck Railway stored in the building; also some hay, straw and fodder, on all which there was no insurance. His loss will reach $250. The building was uninsured also, and was valued at $200.

The Fire Department responded as soon as it could, but the fire was over when they arrived on the ground.

The book, Ancestors and Descendants of John H. BRADSHAW, etc. by J. Douglas BRADSHAW lists an article in the "Weekly Advertiser" dated April 4, 1847. I don't know if this is his mistake on the date or if the cooper shop burned yet another time. The article follows:

On Monday night at 9 1/2 o'clock, the cooper shop of U. H. BRADSHAW located in the upper end of town, was found to be on fire, and owing to the wind and the combustible materials therein, it was soon completely destroyed, together with considerable quantity of barrel timber. A very lot of timber was saved by the strenuous exertions who set themselves to work. The loss was a heavy one and there was no insurance.---

He also lists an article from the "Weekly Advertiser" dated June 20, 1847 which reads:

Capt. U. H. BRADSHAW has erected on the site of the cooper shop on the site destroyed by fire on the 30th March last, a new brick building, with sufficient dimensions to employ 15 hands or more....

On November 15, 1836, Uriah H. BRADSHAW obtained a policy from the Mutual Assurance Society in the amount of $1,000.00 for fire coverage for the following property:

" Fauquier Street South, Caroline East & Princess Ann Street West--In the town of Fredericksburg--In the county of Spotsylvania." Since his cooper shop seems never to be insured at the time of fires, I am led to believe that this insurance was on his home. There is a plat drawing of the proposed insured property included which upon the drawing of the building says "A DWELLING Wood", which also leads me to believe that this property was his home and not his business.

    Notes:

Albert Corpening came to Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War.

These sketches were originally written by Col Thomas George Walton (1815-1905). 1st published in the old Morganton Herald in 1894

    The CORPENING FAMILY

"ALBERT CORPENING, a native of the Netherlands, settled in Pennsylvania and married a lady of German parentage, BARBARA PROPST. He removed to Burke County about the year 1777, purchased a large tract of land on John's River from the heirs of Gen. JOSEPH MCDOWELL, (KNOWN AS "Ash Hill), on which Gen. MCDOWELL lived at the time of his death in 1801. Mr. CORPENING was the ancestor of five sons, JOHN, GEORGE, JACOB, ABRAM, and DAVID CORPENING., all of whom were respected, industrious. Well-to-do farmers of ample means, owning good lands on the Catawba , Linville and John's Rivers and Lower Creek. All by the name of CORPENING of this county are descendants of these five brothers. Mr. ALBERT CORPENING had one daughter, MARY, who was the wife of Major FORNEY of Upper Creek. Mrs. Forney was known for all those good qualities...industry, thrift, hospitality and benevolence, characteristic of the better class of Germans."

"They came to North Carolina in the winter of 1774, settling in Lincoln County. When they came to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia they were snow-bound for about forty days and during that time they lodged with a farmer. Corpening helped the farmer at one shilling and board per day, and his wife helped the farmer's wife for her board.

It is said that another man came with them. He was not inclined to work at only a shilling per day and would pay his board. One made $5.00, the other spent $5.00

Albert Corpening lived about a year in Lincoln County, then moved to Burke County (now Caldwell County) and settled on Lower Creek. The log house that he built on the east side of Lower Creek was still standing in 1920. The land Albert Corpening owned was granted by Earl Granville under King George II - being granted to Philip Kearns January 8, 1761. It was conveyed to Conrad Mitchel in 1762, then to John Conrad Kearns in 1744, then to Christopher Beckman in 1780, and to Albert Corpening in 1780."

From a paper in my possession.

The family that left North Carolina for Maryland and later Pennsylvania spelled their name Chorpening.

"Tradition has it that there were four brothers in the family that came across from Netherlands. Also that their home had been in Netherlands only a short time. It is believed that they were originally French Huequenots. They settled first in North Carolina. At an early date three of the Corpening men in company with one, John Walter, moved from North Carolina to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where they formed the acquaintace of the Dewalt Aukneys, French Huguenots direct from France. After several years residence in Maryland (Washington County) the men of the family with John Walter and the Aukneys went to Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where they bought farms. Tradition says that on account of trouble with the Indians in that section the families were left behind in Maryland for safety until such time as seemed discreet for them to be moved to Pennsylvania. During this period the men made several trips back and forth, finally moving the families about 1780. At the time the Corpenings settled in Pennsylvania, the population was almost entirely German, which accounts for many ideas we have held for years. Van Corpening is on some of the old tombstones in Pennsylvania and seemed to confirm the idea that they were German. But this was only through intermarriage most probably."

From letter of Mrs. Betty Corpening Blair, Clarksburg, West Virginia.

In 1790 Burke County had 13 militia companies: "The seventh company, with Albert Corpening as Captain had 98 heads of families, and lay on John's River, some of which is in present Burke territory but included 90 heads of families from Caldwell."

    From "Here Will I Dwell"

"Albert purchased a large acreage on both sides of Lower Creek in the Copenhagen section of Caldwell County from Christian Beckman. Other large tracts were added to this."

    From Heritage of Caldwell County.

Albert married Barbara Propst 23 Jun 1774, Northampton County, PA, USA. Barbara (daughter of Johann Michael Propst and Anna Maria Kerr) was born 2 Feb 1754, Lynn Township, Hampton City, York County, Pennsylvania; died Abt 1829, Burke County or Caldwell County, North Carolina; was buried 1829. [Group Sheet]
